I love working openly without restriction. It is this way I can let the artist inside take control with no governing direction in play. Stories start to unfold as I paint... My first thought was to have a warrior basking in the carnage of his victory. Bodies littered all about his feat. As I worked the image up, I started to feel a sense of loss. I began to see a lady in his arms. Was this his wife, friend or perhaps someone he had taken pity on? Perhaps he tried to rescue her from an attack. Several hours into this my decision was final. He was to be a Mayan warrior. He was chosen and tasked to take one of his wives, and offer her up as a blood sacrifice to the war god Buluc Chabtan. You will notice a few members of his tribe preparing for the battle down below.
